The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA (CASPCA) is an open-admission animal welfare organization serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County. We are dedicated to saving lives and promoting the compassionate treatment of animals through sheltering, medical care, adoption, and community outreach. CASPCA also provides contracted municipal animal services for the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle, ensuring that every healthy and treatable animal has the opportunity for a safe and loving home.
Job Summary
The Shelter Veterinarian is a vital leader within CASPCA’s veterinary team. This role oversees the health and well-being of all animals in our care, providing high-quality medical treatment and performing high-volume spay/neuter surgeries, along with other soft-tissue procedures.
In addition to direct animal care, the Shelter Veterinarian develops and monitors medical protocols, mentors veterinary and animal care staff, and ensures compliance with state, federal, and DEA regulations. The ideal candidate is collaborative, compassionate, and committed to lifesaving shelter medicine.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide comprehensive medical care and treatment for shelter animals.
Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter and other surgeries.
Develop and maintain medical and shelter protocols, including disease prevention and outbreak response.
Train and mentor veterinary staff, technicians, and animal care teams.
Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
Communicate with fosters, adopters, and the public in a professional, compassionate manner.
Assess animal welfare and perform humane euthanasia when necessary.
Ensure compliance with DEA and state veterinary regulations, including controlled substances management.
Participate in community outreach events such as low-cost vaccine clinics.
Required Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree from an accredited school.
Active Virginia veterinary license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
Current DEA license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
Surgical proficiency, including high-volume spay/neuter and pediatric procedures.
Knowledge of shelter medicine, infectious disease management, and epidemiology.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills with staff, volunteers, and the public.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Valid Virginia driver’s license.

Requirements
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
Ability to lift and move up to 65 lbs.
Exposure to animals, zoonotic diseases, disinfectants, and allergens.
Risk of bites and scratches in the course of duties.
Ability to work compassionately in a shelter environment, including exposure to euthanasia.
